My friends call me ‘Blondi’ because of my bright blond hair. I live in Haifa with my parents Yossie and Lea, and my brothers Arik and Almog. I’m in the eleventh grade at Hannah Szenes ORT school and I am majoring in computers. I love to surf, and you can always find me on the beach or in the sea.
On the rare occasion I’m inland, I’m deep into my other passions like sports, music and electronics. I have lots of friends at school, but the most important to me is girlfriend Ortal, and we spend all our free time together. I’ve been taking driving lessons and I cannot wait to get my license so Ortal and I can go wherever we want! And since I’ll be graduating soon, I’ve been thinking a lot about my upcoming military service and my future.
After school on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, Ortal, two of her friends and I boarded the Number 37 Egged bus headed down the city’s main Moriah Boulevard. Ortal and her friends got off at the main stop in the center of Carmel to grab a bite to eat, but I decided to head home. Ortal kissed me goodbye. Two minutes later, Palestinian terrorist Mahmoud Umdan Salim Qawasmeh, a 20 year old student at the Palestine Polytechnic University from Hebron – studying computers just like me – detonated an explosive device. It was laden with metal shrapnel to inflict the maximum amount of damage, injury and death. I was killed, along with 16 other people – many of them schoolchildren headed home… just like me. 53 others were injured.
My name is Asaf Zur. I am 17 years old. And I am one of The Fallen Faces.
